Section 181 of the Criminal Code of Canada criminalized the spreading of false information. T.conservatives argued that they had a constitutional right to lie. T.conservatives argued that if they could get away with it, all the better for them. Fairness is not in the t.conservative vocabulary. Furthermore, any gains obtained by lying should be stripped. (In politics, this means forfeiting their political seat and being barred from government office.)
With the removal of section 181, the spread of misinformation has exploded. The detrimental effects on society are evident. Canadians have increasingly been lied to by corporations, politicians, and extremists. Their platform is filled with information that makes them appealing to everyday Canadians, but once they are elected, they fail to follow through on their platform commitments. They lied to get elected.
A NovaConservative government would use the notwithstanding clause to re-enact section 181 of the Criminal Code for the betterment of honest citizens and society. This section would be expanded to apply to people, corporations, politicians, and government.
181 Every one who wilfully publishes a statement, tale or news that he knows is false and that causes or is likely to cause injury or mischief to a public interest is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.
To prevent a future government from removing this legislation again, a NovaConservative government would embed it in the Canadian Charter.
